Description

Vinyl LP pressing. 2010 sophomore release from Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward. She & Him make music for an eternal springtime, when the temperature is warm enough to go riding with the top (or at least the windows) rolled down and the radio turned up. They occupy an alternate universe where the saddest of songs feel as warm as sun showers; the rain may be coming down, but somewhere nearby, everything looks bright. What began as a fascinating, no-strings attached collaboration on 2008''s Volume One has evolved into a bona fide touring band, and She & Him are here to stay. Deschanel and Ward are as comfortable and complementary a musical pair as Les Paul and Mary Ford; hearing them again on Volume Two feels like getting together with two old friends. This time, the harmonies have grown more angelically layered, the string arrangements more dramatic, the songwriting even sharper and more confident. But as with Volume One, the prevailing mood is bittersweet, dreamy, and romantic.

I love Zooey so much! Her talent as an actress overwhelmed me when I started watching New Girl, I swear they put nicotine into every episode because you just can’t stop watching! In this age of binging I simply cannot stop watching New Girl, I am close to going through all seven seasons for the third time.
I had to check out Zooey on Google to know whom I was falling in love with and discovered that she was a singer also. ( A lot of great videos on YouTube!) I bought 3 of her CD ‘s and have fallen in love with them also.
She is a once in a generation talent whose beauty is simply overwhelming. She dresses like a lady and she reminds me so much of Olivia Newton John it’s no wonder that I adore her!
If you are not familiar with Zooey I would recommend going on YouTube and watching her music video of “Fools Rush In” before you go any further, if you like what you see explore onward into the wonderful world of She&Him. You will not be disappointed.🌈⚡️💥

Lately there''s been a Renaissances of actresses becoming singers. But while Scarlett Johansson has the soul, Zooey Deschanel has the indie cred & the great music. But while Deschanel provides the sunny vocals, M. Ward is the true master of the album, creating all the complex harmonies and complementing the sunny vocals with equally sunny music. Some duos were just meant to be together, and She & Him are one of them. If anything, it establishes Zooey as a 70s AM Pop Gold Goddess in the 00s/10s.

She & Him are great at establishing the mood and feel of this album. It has a classical feel, while still sounding current, and it still knows how to maintain its charm throughout the whole project. But still, if I had a criticism, it would be that the album has an extreme lack of variety. But though the case may be, the album does it perfectly. Plus, M. Ward does a pretty good job distracting you with his complex & layered harmonies, at which he is a master with.

Overall, Volume Two could be one of the greatest Spring albums of all time, or at least for this Spring. It carries all the feelings of the season, from the carefree sunniness, to the quest and joy of Love. Of course, I''ll admit it right now, I''m kind of partial since Zooey Deschanel is my favorite actress, and I''ve always appreciated M. Ward''s work. But in any case, the two come together perfectly again, even if there is a lack of variet. But rest assured, She & Him have flashes of briliance, and they''re well worth a listen.

She & Him offers the best of both pop worlds: alternative and sixties pop. For the latter, lead singer Zooey Deschanel''s effervescent vocals are reminiscent of the best vintage memories: Dusty Springfield, Leslie Gore, and Petula Clark seem effortlessly evoked as steadfast piano and guitar chords infectiously serenade the listener in a bouncey fashion. For ''Volume Two'' even the studio production echoes the recordings of yesteryear. Yet, the flair is there, too, an essential element, preventing the songs from becoming too much bubblegum to our ears.

Those who like Sixpence None the Richer''s version of "There She Goes" will most likely be enthralled with this little studio album gem. Or, for those more geared to the traditional or hardcore, comparisons can be made with Deschanel''s "Brand New Shoes" and Mo Tucker''s famous vocal performance on "After Hours," the finale of The Velvet''s self-titled album.

Consistency is one of the greatest common denominators of this collection, even if "Don''t Look Back," "Gonna Get Along Without You Now," and "Over It Over Again" are stand outs. Yet countrified songs like "Lingering Still" and "I''m Gonna Make It Better" keep it all fresh and fun.

In sum ''Volume Two'' is a ''Back to the Future'' listening experience: pleasant enough to hook us in, but innovative enough to keep us coming back for more.

I''m very happy that I discovered this album! I only wish I found out about this duo sooner..

There is not much "new" music out there for a Classic Rocker/First Waver like me to listen to. Do not like most of what I see and hear on MTV, VH1 etc. --- but I love this album!!!

This is a very well crafted album. I love the happy, 1960s-ish pop sound. I love Zooey''s songwriting, and M. Wards''s guitar and production.

This is one of those few albums where every time I listen to it, I like it even more. I''ve been listening to it on my drive to and from work for two weeks, and the songs STILL keep growing on me. I find myself humming the tunes throughout the day. I am especially impressed with Zooey''s songwriting. Some may say that the lyrics are simplistic, but they all ring true to me. My receptors receive the words perfectly, like a key into a lock. The She&Him virus has perfectly infected my cells.

I do not understand some of the negative reviews found on Amazon. It may be that because Zooey is a beautiful actress, some are just a little jealous. I cannot say that I have seen many of her movies, but I may have to pay attention to those now. I''m very impressed with her songwriting.

Some reviews use technical-studio sound jargon to describe it. The singing is NOT a studio trick - I have listed to some of the live performances on YouTube and such. The songs sung live have a lot of kick, and add even more meaning and depth. Besides, I do not care how the album was technically recorded, I just want to hear finely crafted pop songs such as these.

I hope they continue to make this series of records!

Saw She & Him on Spectacle. Boring. Heard Volume 1. Mediocre. Saw them play In The Sun on Letterman. Amazing. ZD brought these beautiful songs to Volume 2 and Ward produced and I imagine mostly arranged this perfect summertime record. You could make a lot of these arrangements, because it''s all there; the Orbison crescendo on Thieves, the Pet Sounds break on Don''t Look Back, Leiber and Stoller on Lingering Still. Phil Spector. Brill Building. Brian Wilson. Everything you would expect from a singer who told Wilson she cries when she hears Surfer Girl, whose favorite song is Wouldn''t It Be Nice. Ward tracks ZD and verbs her in the 1950''s cowgirl style that suits her husky voice. There''s no irony in the performances, no showing off in the arrangements. It''s the songs that make the record special and not just derivative. "A love like ours is terrible news(Thieves.") "Orpheus melted the heart of Persephone(Don''t Look Back.")"I''m running away it makes me feel better(Brand New Shoes.") Deschanel is a terrific songwriter, and this 1960''s/West Coast flavored record is the best thing in 2010. If you download it, drop in the B-side of In The Sun, the Beach Boys via Barry/Greenwich/Spector/Ronettes I Can Hear Music, and the soundtrack song, the oft-covered Smiths Please, Please, Please... They both fit perfectly.

The best I can do is say I hate Anne Murray, but this is lie Anne Murray, but done right. Confusing? Yes, but that''s how I see it.

This is good, fun music that makes you feel something. The singer of this band has a superb voice. It''s not perfect, but if it were, it wouldn''t make me feel the way I do. Perfection is overrated. This album just makes me feel something, and that''s the biggest praise I can give a piece of music.

I really didn''t expect to like She & Him and only checked them out on a whim because Zooey Deschanel is involved. It''s very chintzy, very sweet and constantly treading a line between cheery pop and melancholy indie balladry. Nothing like the hardcore and blues that tend to dominate my listening. Yet somehow it works. One thing that''s as abundantly clear on this album as on its predecessor is the love for the songs. Despite good production, extremely tight musicianship and a little bit of studio frippery when it comes to laying down the strings (more on them later) it''s still a remarkably raw sound. The instruments are unmolested by distortion and there is genuine warmth to Deschanel''s surprisingly versatile voice which all point to a genuine passion project. I''ve said what I think She & Him are a combination of and whilst the cheer and bubblegum may have had the edge on Volume One the tonal barometer here balances them with melancholy and longing rather than keeping them separate. Not that S&H have suddenly turned into Joy Division but even the upbeat songs, which still comprise the majority of the album, have downbeat moments or lyrics. There are still plenty of multi-layered harmonies to prevent anything from sounding too serious, though. Now for the only real negative: Someone ought to give Ward a slap the next time he suggests bolting some strings onto what is otherwise a good song. I fully admit to disliking strings unless very surreptitiously and sparingly used and those used on Volume Two vindicate my feelings on the matter. Sing makes good use of a solitary violin but elsewhere, almost wherever they pop up, strings detract from the song as a whole, slowing it down and pushing other instruments further back in the mix. Don''t Look Back is great example of this with the chintzy chorus followed by a little piano line which has a realtively quick tempo and light bouncy tone. Competing with it are slow drawn out strings which completely counterract what the group seem to be trying to achieve. With it''s infectious cheer and energy She & Him''s retro pop-rock deserves at least a listen. You might just find the perfect summer album in the process. A good second record which bodes well for the future. 9/10 I usually try and recommend a few standout tracks here but I wantto recommend all but a couple of the 13 here; though the sacharine pair of Home and I''m Gonna Make It Better alongside the singalong friendly In The Sun and Over It Over Again would be my choices if really pushed.
